Interesting Books on Training & the Effects of Combat

"A truly good book teaches me better than to read it. I must soon lay it down, and commence living on its hint. What I began by reading, I must finish by acting."

- Henry David Thoreau

Knowledge is power. Those of us at Warrior Sciences know that training the mind is just as important as training the body. Below is a list of books that we highly recommend for those who seek the knowledge of a true warrior: one that is prepared both physically and mentally for whatever challenges they may face.

You will find a very short review for each book, as well as a small excerpt that will further help determine whether the information contained therein is of any use to you. Sharpening the Warrior's Edge: The Psychology & Science of Training

This book pioneered "warrior science" in the modern age of combat and technology. It's focus on training methodologies makes it one of the most important books on this list. Published in 1995, it paved the way for authors like Dave Grossman and Loren Christenson (On Combat), along with Michael Asken (Warrior Mindset).

On Combat: The Psychology & Physiology of Deadly Conflict in War & Peace

After reading this book, you'll have a good idea of what you'll experience before, during, and after a deadly conflict. This knowledge will help you recover from the effects of combat in the short term and long term.

Warrior Mindset: Mental Toughness Skills for a Nation's Peacekeepers

Warrior Mindset sets out to do three things; improve self-confidence, improve performance of tasks under high levels of stress, and decrease psychological damage from experiencing stressful, life or death, situations. These things should be a priority for all human beings, especially those who take it upon themselves to walk the warrior's path.

The Tactical Pistol: Advanced Gunfighting Concepts and Techniques

The Tactical Pistol, while by no means a substitute for seeking out a skilled instructor, will provide the fundamental concepts and techniques for deploying a firearm in different situations, as well as what to do if you experience a weapon malfunction when you need your gun the most.

Tactical Pistol Marksmanship: How to Improve Your Combat Shooting Skills

Just as in the previous book, Suarez presents information in a logical, easy to follow format that will instantly “click” with most readers. Three chapters at the end of the book are dedicated to drills that progress from most basic to advanced. The entire book is worth getting for these last chapters alone.
